About the Department

Established in 1902, the Art History Department of the University of Chicago enters its second century as a leader of innovative teaching and research in a multi-faceted discipline. Faculty specialization ranges from the ancient world to modern cinema, but paths of inquiry are strongly interdisciplinary and traditional field boundaries are often traversed.

The Art History Department is located in the Cochrane-Woods Art Center at 5540 South Greenwood Avenue, part of an arts complex shared with the Smart Museum of Art and the Court Theater.
