Art History Department Checklist for Admissions

Applications should be initiated at http://humanities.uchicago.edu/prospective/#admissions. Paper applications are not accepted

Deadline for admissions and financial aid for the academic year 2008-09 is around mid-December.
The Department of Art History admits applicants once a year for the following fall quarter. Applications received after the deadline cannot be considered for aid. All students are eligible to apply for university fellowships; the aid application is included. Teaching assistantships and lectureships are available only for advanced students.

The Department does not require interviews for applicants at the M.A.level, but you are welcome to visit the campus, sit in on classes, and schedule appointments with faculty in your area of interest. If you are already the recipient of an M.A. in Art History and will be applying directly to the Ph.D program, we require that you contact those faculty members with whom you would like to work, and discuss your program of study with them. These conversations should occur before you submit your application.

Degree Objective:
All applicants should indicate their ultimate degree objective. Please be aware, however, that students admitted to the MA program who wish to pursue a doctorate must formally petition the faculty for entry into the Ph.D. program after they have successfully completed all requirements for the Master's degree.

References:
Three letters of reference should be included with your application.

Graduate Record Examinations and TOEFL Scores:
Graduate Record Exam scores (general test only) are required of all applicants, including those with previous MAs. For information on additional examinations required of some international applicants, please see the Test Requirements page on the divisional website.

The University GRE code is: 1832
The Department GRE code is: 2999

Personal Statement:
All applicants should carefully state their purpose in pursuing a graduate degree. This statement is given considerable weight in the final decision regarding admission.

Writing Sample:
All applicants should submit a sample of their scholarly writing; a course paper of 15 pages long would be appropriate. Candidates holding a Master's degree in Art History from another institution and wishing to apply directly to the PhD program must include a more substantial piece of work such as a seminar research paper or the Master's thesis itself.

Transcripts:
Official transcripts from all post-secondary Educational Institutes should be submitted with your application.

Admissions Decisions
All admissions decisions are sent in writing from the admissions office in early March. No decisions will be given in phone or email. Unless you are contacted by the department, please direct all questions about your application directly to the admissions office (humanitiesadmissions@uchicago.edu).

If you have further questions about admissions, please contact the Dean of Students Office at humanitiesadmissions@uchicago.edu
