Visual Resources Collection
Mission
The mission of the Visual Resources Collection (VRC) is to expertly support the Department of Art History and The University of Chicago community through the provision and development of high-quality visual resources for the study and teaching of Art History.
Established in 1902 alongside the Department of Art History, the collection has grown from an extensive lantern slide collection into holdings of more than 350,000 35mm slides and more than 150,000 digital images. Coverage ranges from prehistoric to contemporary time periods and includes painting, sculpture, decorative arts, architecture, film stills, and didactic materials, to name a few.
The purpose of the collection is to support the teaching and research needs of departmental faculty and students. Other faculty and students are encouraged to make use of the collection after a brief orientation with the VRC staff.
What does this mean for you?
The VRC staff can help you find, scan, and display images of artwork. We also teach professors and their students how to use image databases and classroom presentation tools. To learn more, please visit the VRC’s blog, All Things Visual.
