Visual Resource Center and the Center for Digital Scholarship
Using Perma.cc to Archive Webpages
A study by Pew Research Center states that “38% of webpages that existed in 2013 are no longer accessible a decade later.” This 45-minute workshop, co-hosted by the Center for Digital Scholarship and the Department of Art History, explores what’s at stake and how scholars can proactively archive cited web pages so their readers will be able to see the archived webpage even if the original is no longer available.
Christine Mehring, Mary L. Block Professor of Art History and the College, will share a case study about a recent issue where a copy editor needed to confirm a citation on a gallerist’s website that had suddenly left the web. Luckily, the Internet Archive had crawled the site, but what if it hadn’t?
The Center for Digital Scholarship will demonstrate Perma.cc, a tool that enables you to archive webpages and avoid problems with broken links down the road. They will share best practices and common challenges, and participants will learn how to get started using Perma.cc to archive and manage web resources relevant to their research and scholarship.
This workshop is open to current UChicago faculty, students, and staff. Those in the Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, and Divinity are particularly encouraged to attend.
