Biography
Emily Slavin is an arts educator and art historian formerly based in Fort Worth, TX. She joins the department of Art History as the Academic Support Administrator (ASA) after graduating from the University of Chicago Master of Arts Program in the Humanities.
Emily earned her B.A. in Art History and English from the University of North Texas, going on to work in art museums and continue promoting creative pedagogical tools. Wanting to explore the relationship between arts organizations and communities more deeply, she completed the Museum Studies post-graduate program through Northwestern University. This research encouraged her to pursue the MAPH program here at UChicago, in which she specialized in Art History and Curatorial Studies. Her culminating thesis challenged contemporary treatments of self-taught artists and digital museum education resources. Concurrently, she supported UChicago artists and scholars in her role as the Curator of Public Programs for the Chat About MFA x MAPH exhibition and program series.
Seeing creating as a means of learning, Emily maintains a personal artistic practice of painting and printmaking. Her work has been published in the MAPH publication, Common Forms, and the North Texas Review. Moving from working in museum spaces to higher education, Emily is proud to bring her knowledge of student engagement, creative collaborations, and campus offerings to her work as the ASA.
