Martin Schwarz

Biography

Martin is a PhD candidate in medieval art history. Before beginning his graduate studies at UChicago, Martin completed an MA in art history at the University of Vienna, writing his master thesis on the Dominican mystic Henry Suso. During a year-long graduate internship in the Manuscripts Department at the J. Paul Getty Museum, he curated the exhibition Heaven, Hell, and Dying Well: Images of Death in the Middle Ages. Martin's dissertation project looks at Scholasticism through its visual and material culture. Within the context of thirteenth and fourteenth-century Paris, the project explores ways of re-inscribing images, artifacts, and architecture into medieval intellectual culture and history. Martin also studies and has published on the history of the discipline of art history in Germany and Austria in the 1920s and 1930s.
