Belz’s most recent film documents the making of Nixe and other sculptures as well as the German artist’s creative process: his techniques ranging from moulding to computer simulation to integrating patterns produced by an out-of-control machine, and his workshop producing art on an often monumental scale from materials including “nasty” wax, clay, and bronze.     Belz is known for her films about art and artists, including Inside the Uffizi (2021), Peter Handke: In the Woods, Might be Late (2016), Gerhard Richter Painting (2012), and The Richter Window (2007), which result from close relationships with her subjects: “I feel responsible for the people with whom I make a film.” In 2017, she collaborated with Gerhard Richter and Steve Reich on the abstract film Moving Picture (946-3). Her work has been honored with the German Film Award for Best Documentary Film and the Filmpreis NRW. Students interested in participating in a small discussion with Belz on Thursday May 2 from 2-3.20pm should email Prof. Christian Scheidemann at scheidemann@uchicago.edu.
