Cybele Tom

Biography

Cybele is a doctoral candidate studying the art and material culture of medieval and early modern western Europe. Her current research focuses on intermediality and medium-specificity, practices of mimesis, and issues of materiality and making. She holds a double-MA in Conservation and the History of Art from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. Previously an objects conservator at the Art Institute of Chicago, she specialized in the technical examination and care of polychrome sculpture. She remains committed to conservation methods and approaches, particularly as wonder-generating tools for teaching, and to exploring disciplinary ruptures between conservation and art history.
