Biography
Sizhao Yi is a PhD candidate specializing in East Asian art and material culture, with a focus on Late Imperial China. Her dissertation, tentatively titled “Between Object and Subject: The Visual Discourse of Things in the Works of Chen Hongshou (1599-1652),” investigates issues of material and materiality, image making, intermediality, and agency of things through the lenses of Chen Hongshou’s artistic practices. From 2023 to 2024, she served as the Rhoades Curatorial Intern and Frankenthaler/Taylor Fellow at the Art Institute of Chicago. Before pursuing her doctorate, she interned in textile conservation at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences' Archaeology Institute and worked as a freelance journalist for Quartz.
