We are pleased to announce the launch of CWAC Voices, an online journal for art criticism and exhibition reviews written in UChicago classes.

As conceived by Prof. Christine Mehring, featured students share their writing about art with peers in any discipline and with art buffs in Chicago and beyond. CWAC Voices is born from confidence in the public value of student thinking, and from concomitant commitment to support student success beyond campus confines. While taking its name from the home of our Department of Art History, the Cochrane-Woods Art Center, CWAC Voices welcomes submissions of edited student writing about art from all UChicago instructors, including graduate student teachers.

The first issue features some of the best reviews written for Prof. Mehring’s fall class “Writing Art Criticism.” Texts went through several editorial rounds during and after the class: in addition to Mehring’s editing, students edited one another and received professional edits and comments from a group of visiting critics, including alumni Lo Drexelius, Solveig Nelson, and Maggie Taft. Staff at the Visual Resource Center and publications intern Yufei Chen created the beautiful website.
